Electric, propane, or diesel: choosing a forklift fuel in Michigan
Fuel is not only about cost. It decides where the truck can run, what you need on site to keep it running, and which safety rules come with it. We will ask, so it helps to know the trade-offs first.

How the safety standard labels trucks
OSHA's standard uses eleven designations for fire safety: D, DS, and DY for diesel; E, ES, EE, and EX for electric; G and GS for gasoline; and LP and LPS for liquefied petroleum gas, which is propane. The letters after the fuel describe added safeguards. For example, EX units are built so they may be used in certain atmospheres with flammable vapors or dusts. The standard requires a location to be classified as hazardous or nonhazardous before choosing which truck may be used there.
Electric
Electric trucks do not burn fuel, so they add no engine exhaust to the building. They do need a charging area. MIOSHA Part 21 requires a designated area for battery changing or charging, done by a trained and authorized employee, with spill flushing and neutralizing, fire protection, ventilation for fumes, and a ban on smoking and other ignition sources there.
Propane (LP)
Propane trucks burn liquefied petroleum gas. In Michigan, Part 21 points LP gas use and storage to General Industry Safety Standard Part 56. Exhaust is a factor indoors: the federal standard says carbon monoxide from truck operations must stay within the limits in 29 CFR 1910.1000, and Part 21 lists carbon monoxide and diesel exhaust among required training topics.
Diesel
Diesel trucks burn diesel fuel, and Part 21 lists diesel exhaust among the hazards operators must be trained on. Part 21 requires a refueling area at least 25 feet from any open flame or spark source, posted as such, and prohibits smoking while refueling. The federal standard says fuel tanks must not be filled while the engine is running.
How one maker covers every fuel
Crown's rental inventory shows the full range from one maker: the FC 5700 Series runs on battery power, the C-5 1000 Series on LP gas with cushion tires, the C-5 1050 Series on LP gas with pneumatic tires, and the C-5 1055 Series on diesel with pneumatic tires.
Toyota, Hyster, and Yale trucks, which Michigan dealers such as Bell Forklift and Alta Equipment carry, also come in electric and engine powered models.

Frequently asked questions
Can a propane forklift be used inside?
Propane trucks are used indoors in many buildings, but exhaust is regulated. Carbon monoxide levels must stay within OSHA limits, and ventilation matters. Describe the building in your request so we can advise.
Which fuel is cheapest to rent?
We do not publish prices. Ask for a quote that includes fuel or charging, delivery, and pickup so you know the full cost.
